The human skin consists of three layers namely: the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the top layer without blood vessels and acts as a protective barrier. Second to the epidermis is the dermis. It is a thick layer and this is where the tattoos are formed. Since the epidermis is constantly renewed, with the skin permanently high excretion in a lifetime, the tattoo is pushed deeper into the dermis where it should remain unperturbed at all times.

Tattoo needles penetrate the skin for about 1.5 millimeters or 1 16 of an inch farther. The tattooist must ensure that the ink is just enough to be permanent and no longer than necessary. The depth varies in certain areas of the body, as it is thinner on places like the genitals and deeper on the soles of the feet.

If a tattoo is too deep, reaching the subcutaneous tissues, it causes bleeding and pain. It will also appear blurry even after it has healed. And if a few millimeters below the skin, it leaves scratches and simply disappear.
