General Packet Radio Service is a wireless data service. This service is available with GSM. GPRS allows data transmission rate of bytes per second. GPRS is used for
Many features such as SMS, MMS, Internet, Wireless Application Protocol, etc.
How do GPRS:
The functions in the GPRS packet switched system, like many users use a single common channel
for data transfer. It is a set of users share a bandwidth for intermittent
transmission such as web browsing, send and receive e-mails. GPRS originally supported
Internet Protocol connections. However, it is now also used for the purposes of transmission
in the mobile telephony standards. Data transfer via GPRS is charged at the kilobyte of data transferred.
Based on the use of GPRS devices are classified into different types or classes:
Type 1: These devices can be connected to GSM and GPRS and they work by allowing both the
services. This requires two radios, as there are two frequencies transmitted.
Type 2: These devices can be connected to GSM and GPRS. However, only one service can
be used simultaneously. Most mobile phones are designed in this way only.
Type 3: These devices can be connected to GSM and GPRS, but the connection must be switched on
manually. Therefore, even these devices can use one service at a time.
During a session of data transfer, the user will receive a pair of frequency channels. The
uplink and downlink. These are combined with many pairs of frequency channels to form such a
communication mode packed. Each package will be his own long time, depending on the time interval
GSM. The speed of GPRS depends on the number of slots allocated. On this basis the devices are
classified as follows:
Class 2: GPRS least developed
Class 4: Modest GPRS set up. This will be a little faster than Class 2.
Class 6: Modest GPRS set up. It's better than class 4.
Class 8: Better put in place. It will be faster than classes 4 and 6.
Class 10: Better put in place. It is faster than Class 8. We see in cell phones and PC
cards.
Class 12: Best set up. Seen only in high end PC cards.
The function of GPRS is packet based. The phone or a particular system will have many IP addresses
allocated. GPRS will store addresses and forward them to the cell phone while
transfer.
