Is this as far as it can be pushed through CSS? The short answer imho is no. This is really just the beginning. I'm patiently (read hopefully) looking forward to seeing some of the work you, our users/visitors, have created as well as your suggestions.
The IE only solution to the horizontal bar is appears a bit more flexible (but browser limited). In the more cross browser version, to date I have only been able to achieve success by hard coding specific heights and widths into my stylesheet. This leads me to believe a more optimial solution exists.
Thus I must admit, however unhappily, at the end of this example/tutorial, I feel I have only offered general direction as opposed to our usual "cut and paste" style solutions. I hope in some way shape or form this has been useful :).
