Metal Bellows for Critical Industrial Applications

Metal bellows are manufactured and sold by companies specializing in metal expansion joints and other piping. These couplings have proven to be versatile and meet a wide variety of applications.

Article:

I built my first bellows 35 years ago from leather and wood. My father was a Union Sheet Metal and enjoyed building small projects. metal bellows for industry in general serve a purpose other than this, even if they work the same. But .... there are metal bellows pumps that operate in certain critical applications in the industry.

Bellows, in general, and seal the interior space while allowing movement. They provide a hermetic, all metals, the pressure barrier and seal that flexes different directions.

In air ducts for buildings, often the air handling system will vibrate, and to avoid transmitting vibrations to the rest of the system, the bellows are used to reduce vibration. Bellows can often align the end of a plenum or air duct after the system is built. They are very resistant to weapons compared to mechanical seals with O-rings.

Sometimes, the expansion is expected due to changes in temperature, so a bellows is installed to allow for expansion without stressing the joints or connections. It is the most common use, allowing a section of a conveyor system to move without causing stress to the mounting brackets. Over time, the movement to tear all joints firmly attached and holes can develop.

The stress at the joints is a major problem with highly engineered structures. Recently, a vehicle bridge collapsed in Minnesota, and the cause may be stress that has built over time and, possibly, the seals have failed. bellows used to eliminate or reduce stress in various structures in your liquid or air handling systems.

Bellows are considered an expansion joint, and their design is often covered by the standards set by the Manufacturers Association of expansion joint. EJMA specifications are the standards used to design an appropriate framework which will occur to the specifications requested. This is both for reasons of safety and performance. The amount of pressure that the system will contain part of the system specifications.

There are generally two different methods of production of metal bellows. Some small bellows are formed on a machine that produces parts for mass scale.

If you have gas appliances in your house there is probably a section of bellows formed when the gas attaches to your equipment. This flexible tubing filled with gas inside, allows easy alignment, and most importantly, reduce stress on connection points.

When these devices contain flammable gases in your home, reducing the long-term stress is a critical safety measure. formed Bellows are also used in large applications such as air conditioning, and major piping systems.

At the other end there are welded bellows which may require custom fabrication for each situation. With this method, each piece, called a diaphragm, the bellows is custom cut and welded into the bellows needed for a particular situation. This can be made from any metal able to be welded, but in general, stainless materials are used.

Clearly, this is a much more expensive and has many applications in medicine, heavy industry, defense, aviation and aerospace.

Metal bellows are manufactured and sold by companies specializing in metal expansion joints and other piping. These couplings have proven to be versatile and meet a wide variety of applications. They allow you to control the fluid flow and containment in your system in a wide range of pressures, thermal expansion and contraction, pulsations, vibrations, movement of equipment and convoluted routing requirements.
