Building a Stratum 1 NTP server GPS
The Network Time Protocol (NTP) was developed to provide
how to synchronize to precision internet customers
time reference system. NTP allows both the client
computers to be fixed at a fraction of the good
time. The NTP is a suite of programs designed
specifically for purposes of time synchronization. The
source code of the application is freely downloadable from the NTP
website. Originally developed for the Linux operating
system, NTP has since been ported to Microsoft Windows
platforms.
By interfacing an accurate reference clock to the NTP
software distribution, you can provide a Stratum 1 NTP
server. This article describes how to use a low cost
GPS receiver in combination with the NTP
distribution to provide an accurate Stratum 1 NTP server
time reference.
NTP source code is available on the NTP website
and must be compiled on the local machine. Distribution
excerpts from a working directory where the simple configuration
and build scripts are available to install the
software. Many Linux distributions come pre-installed
versions. To configure a stratum 1
NTP server clock specific reference is needed. NTP
software provides a large number of reference clock drivers
that can be used to interface with a range of equipment
time references. reference material can generally schedule
be relatively expensive equipment. However, the
popularity of GPS navigation devices has reduced the cost
GPS technology. GPS receivers are cheap now easily
Available in about $ 100. Many GPS receivers have a RS232
serial communications, which can be easily connected
to a PC. Most GPS receivers use NMEA communications
Protocol which provides time and location information of each
second. The synchronization information may be used by the NTP
software as a time reference to provide accurate
Stratum 1 NTP server.
The NTP software must be compiled with the NMEA
reference clock driver to interface with the GPS receiver.
Once compiled, the application must be configured to use
the correct serial port. In the end, the NTP software
provide a very precise layer NTP server
resources.
Most computers such as Linux and Microsoft Windows servers
and network devices such as routers and switches can
synchronize time with an NTP server. Any device that has a
NTP or SNTP client can be configured to obtain accurate information
time from a server. Typically, customers need only IP
address of the NTP server for synchronization. With NTP
server, you can synchronize any device on your
network.
