Bicycles explained ... Coated: faster and more relaxing
by: Bill Wallmuller
Many bike speed records have been broken by recumbent bikes. Recumbent bicycles were banned from international competition for the year 1934 and they had not seen widespread use until the late 20th century.
A recumbent bicycle is a kind of puts the driver in a sitting or lying down, and rarely prone.
biker lying hold many world speed records for human-powered, non-rhythmic types of races. Interestingly, tricycles that fall into the category of recumbents and for some reason are generally accepted in the bike up 'main' category.
recumbent bicycles are generally further classified by the size of their wheelbase. There are long wheelbase recumbents (LWB), short wheelbase (SWB) recumbent bikes, and (Clwb) compact long wheelbase recumbents.
Each of these types of recumbent also have somewhat different positioning of the pedals and wheels from the seat. With a long wheelbase recumbents the pedals are located between the seat and the front wheel.
Compact wheelbase recumbents their pedals either above the front wheel or very close to him. And short wheelbase recumbents have their pedals in front of the front wheel.
Recumbent have several advantages over traditional bikes or standing. Some of these differences are described below:
Health
Recumbent encourage a posture that reduces stress on the body. This makes them ideal for long journeys. When a motorcycle is comfortable for long periods of time it is logical that we're likely to bike farther, right?
A big plus is the movement of the lower body too. In a recumbent legs are positioned at approximately the same height as our hearts, thereby reducing the hydrostatic pressure and strain on the heart's blood flowing through those areas.
Stability
recumbents are much more stable for obvious reasons: with some there are more wheels! In addition, recumbents are situated closer to the ground.
Variety
When choosing a recumbent bicycle, riders have many more varieties to choose bikes as traditional vertical. There are all sorts of variations and degrees of uprightness from which to choose.
There are some drawbacks. On the one hand, recumbent riders do not change position, like standing on an upright bike down a hill. And you will stimulate a new set of muscles. Recumbent bicycles use different muscle groups with the power of the bike upright bike does.
Unlike upright bikes, there is a subculture of recumbent builders who design and build the home built recumbents. Many times these are assembled from parts of other bikes, mountain bikes in particular. The frame designs can be simple like a long steel tube bent into the appropriate form for hand-built carbon fiber frames. For many manufacturers, engineering of bicycles is both a challenge and fun as their constituency.
