The UPC bar codes and Rn , Oh My!

Many people coming into the industry t-shirts have tons of questions about what is called the "businessy 'side of the sale of t-shirt and struggle with things like UPC bar codes and RN numbers. To make life a little easier, we'll guide you through research, with the help of some UPC, barcode and RN resource websites.

To understand these terms bit tricky to know what they are really first:

UPC
Universal Product Codes appear as lines of varying widths representing the series of numbers often below the bar. barcode scanners, you will recognize from your favorite retailers, read the bars and convert the 12 digit UPC number that they represent. This number is then considered within the retailer's inventory system for the name of the corresponding product and the price you gave them when you signed your contract for the performance of your product. In short, the UPC is a 12-digit code unique to your product represented by scannable bars.

RN Number Number assigned to clothing manufacturers for labeling garments. The RN number allows the manufacturer of a certain brand to be determined. It is issued by the FTC to U.S. businesses that manufacture, import, distribute or sell products covered by the textile, wool, fur and the Law. Companies can use this number on product labels in lieu of the company name.Information obtaining RN numbers are available from the Federal Trade Commission.

BAR CODE printed series of parallel bars or lines of varying width that is used to enter data into a computer system. The bars are generally black on white, and their width and quantity vary according to demand. The bars are used to represent the binary digits 0 and 1, sequences of which can represent numbers 0-9 and be processed by a digital computer. The presence or absence of a bar, a particular width in a particular position in a sequence is read by the computer as a 0 or 1. Most of these bar codes using only two different widths (thick and thin), though some codes employ four widths. The digits represented by a bar code are also printed on its base. A UPC is one example of barcode.

Now that you have defined, and even reduced to only two words you really need to know (and UPC number RN) Take a look at their uses in the apparel industry.

You are required to label covered products to display the name or identification number of a U.S. company responsible for manufacturing or marketing of the product or the name of a foreign manufacturer. Therefore, you can use your company's business name on the label instead of an RN. The trade name is the full name appearing on the commercial documents, such as purchase orders and invoices. This is not a brand, a brand or designer name (unless it is also the name under which the company operates). Furthermore, the goods may be labeled with the RN or company name of the company that buys goods from you - as a distributor or retailer. If you buy the finished products from a U.S. manufacturer, importer or distributor, they can remain marked with the RN or company name of the company. RN numbers are available only to businesses residing in the United States, however, imported goods can be labeled with the name of their foreign manufacturer. Your number of RN or name of your company belong on labels and tags for your t-shirts.

The UPC code is assigned to each of your styles of products. Not all t-shirt person you have in stock, but each type of t-shirt. For example, a t-shirt with the word KING on it would have a different UPC code of a blue t-shirt with the word queen about this, but the UPC as all other black t-shirts with the word KING them.
